Start with the whole garment

Lay the garment on a light surface in natural light. Check symmetry, drape and stress points: shoulders, crotch, elbows, underarms and hems often tell the clearest story.

Read the seams

Look for even stitching, finished seam allowances and secure buttons. A loose seam may be easy to repair; structural tears or a fragile lining deserve closer assessment.

Check odour and stains

Inspect collars, cuffs and underarms. Check the care label before treating odours or stains: hot water and harsh products can set a mark or damage fibres.

Assess the fit

Move your arms and shoulders, sit down and check the length. The label size is only a clue; garment measurements and ease of movement are more useful than the number.

Make a considered choice

Ask whether the piece works with what you already own and whether you can care for it. It need not be perfect; what matters is understanding its flaws, repair options and care needs.

Style is personal: observe, experiment and choose what genuinely works for you.
